When I say God/Goddess, I mean the Divine, the essence in the heart of all things.
Mountain, lake, sea salt, sandcastle, cherry pits, apple blossoms,
The eyes of your children, palms of beloveds, pizza oven,
Kneaded dough, barbell, treehouse, summer mistletoe,
Classic soccer balls, what’s hidden in pockets of overalls,
The bowing of the head + the whispered thank you
For no reason at all + for all that is at all.
We can be stringent, even puritanical, in our expression.
Lay down your dogma + stop trying to get it right, She says.
Pause, notice, take the time to get to know your inner cosmos—
To know that by which knowing everything else is known.
When approaching the goddess, it’s a cross between “Come as you are” and maybe even showing her that you tried to primp a little.
At least brush your teeth. But even if that’s too much, “Come as you are.”
Show up to your life. Be present to the miracle of your gaze.
We meditate daily in order to build a foundation of intimacy with ourselves.
It’s a way to slow down, take stock, notice & witness the Divine thread through this tapestry of life.
Spoiler alert:
The goal isn’t to be good at meditating, it’s to be skilled at life.
It’s not to stop thinking, it’s to be aware of what you’re thinking, so you can course correct + lean in the direction of growth.
Close down your eyes, and see.
It’s just you as the god/dess in divine form
& the god/dess as you in divine form.
This is the most intimate conversation,
The most intimate interaction,
The most intimate relationship you’ll ever have.
Read that again.
Let it absorb in, like the balm that it is.
Nothing else matters more than this most intimate relationship with Self.
Meanwhile, when this relationship is tended, everything (esp relationships) matters ever more.
Life gains in beauty and mystery and play.
The ache still rises up, yet it is held in a greater expanse of Love & permission to experience all aspects of being human.
This relationship deserves our attention, attendance, and ever-blooming devotion.
Everything is fractal layers like that proverbial onion, the petals of the lotus.
The beauty about the lotus analogy, is its supreme perfection and balance.
It is the essence of infinity itself. There is no end to how deeply we can understand its lessons, or how much we can unfold.
We go deep deep in the muck and the murk, the dark muddy shadow of ourselves, and from that squish, we rise.
We rise. We rise and we taste the sun, unfolding unfurling, unleashing, undulating, opening, fanning, spreading like the sun, but sexier.
Well, that’s unfounded, says the Sun, who obviously wants to be the hottest in all ways. And I say with all my heart, You’re right.
The lotus is just an entirely different experience than Sun, its lunar energy symbiotic with sun and cool moon light.
Both luminaries are formidable teachers in brilliant measure. For we appreciate each more through experiencing its counterpart.
Here’s an invitation that you’ll be happy to have accepted:
Go to your altar right now. If you can, get ready a little. Brush teeth, put on some nice clothes, lip balm.
Spruce it up a little. Dust. Offer some fresh flowers or leaves. Light incense or candles. Sit and wonder at its beauty. Say thank you. Close your eyes, continuing to say thank you. And let yourself sink into the moment. Meditate a minute or 2 or 10. Thank you thank you thank you. Let yourself land in the resonant chamber of pure grace at the heart.
If you don’t have a sacred space set up for yourself already, forge some space; a corner will do. Create a special, beautiful space, as simple as you please. Tend to it every day with your visits and breath. This alone will shift the energy in the whole house/space.
People will notice when they walk in. They may not realize their noticing, but their bodies’ will feel it. The nervous system settles. The shoulders relax. The breath slows and deepens.
It doesn’t mean that the crazies or meltdowns never hit home. But the home is held in a matrix of Love: a pervading presence unfathomably larger than the individual.
Trust. Compassion. Surrender. Detachment. Appreciation and a remembering of our roots, who we are at ever-deepening levels, the lotus in the mud—rooted and rising—become one with the sun. The Divine in flower, light, water, mud, moon, and blessed human form.
Mmmm. Remember.
This is a juicy life.
Make time to notice it and appreciate it + to share your appreciation.
This is a love letter to the Goddess, my altars, myself—in all her incarnations & variations.
What are you marveling in the love letters of your mind?
Love,
Heather
